TONIGHT! Everyman's Infinite Art

Tonight is the opening of "Everyman's Infinite Art", Chapman's participation in the Pacific Standard Time programming. Come check out the exhibition conceived of by Harold Gregor. The opening is at 5:30pm and everyone is welcome!

Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic East European and Eurasian Studies

Dr. Wendy Salmond, full time art professor, took part in the 43rd Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies in Washington DC. The convention took place from November 17-20.  She was a discussant on the panel "Invoking Divine Authority: Russian Icon as Art and Symbol," as well as a participant in the roundtable "Image vs. Text in Scholarship and the Classroom."

Pacific Standard Time: Everyman's Infinite Art

Chapman University, the Department of Art, and the Guggenheim Gallery is partnering with Pacific Standard Time. It's an unprecedented collaboration of more than 60 cultural institutions across Southern California celebrating art in LA from 1945 to 1980.

The exhibit, Everyman's Infinite Art by Harlod Gregor will be showcasing in Guggenheim Gallery November 28, 2011-January 14, 2012.

The Wondering of Nomads is only Formal

Hanna Karsen, BFA Art and BA Art History student, will have a solo exhibition in the Leatherby Libraries entitled the wandering of nomads is only formal. The exhibition is located in the south hallway of the first floor of the Leatherby Libraries. Opening reception will be held on November 30, 2011 from 5:30-7:30pm. This exhibition will be on display from November 30, 2011 until March 2, 2012. Viewing hours: mon-fri 7:00am-2:00am sat-sun 10:00am-2:00am

The FSA Photographs Revisited

When Roy Stryker became head of the Farm Security Administration in 1935, his aim was to create a photographic archive that documented the people (specifically the small tenant farmer, the rural poor) and the times.  The photographers included Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Marion Post Wolcott, and Ben Shahn.  The result: 77,000 printed photographs from 164,000 negatives.

The FSA Photographs Revisited exhibition is featuring work by foundation photography students of adjunct faculty member, Helen Kim, and is an addition to the ongoing visual archive of our times.

Art 329: Intersection of Art and Science

The Art Department is offering a great course for the Spring of 2012: Art 329: Intersection of Art and Science. The class is taken with Professor Halloran and is a creative collaboration between Chapman University and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Opportunities

• Meet the designers and engineers of satellites

for nighttime observational astronomy

at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory

• See new materials and technologies

being developed at JPL

• Get to go to Topanga State Park to look

through telescopes and to experiment with

long exposure photography

If you're a student interested in signing up for the class you must write a one page essay explaining your interest in Art and Science and include samples of your artwork. Only 15 students will be allowed to take the course so don't hold out too long on this great opportunity!

The Departmental Show, Exhibitionist, will be showcasing student artwork November 14-18. You're encouraged to come to the opening reception on November 14 at 5:30pm where there will be live music and an award ceremony for the students whose artwork is displayed.
