Come listen to Art Historian, Alex Sofroniew, this Wednesday, Aprill 11 at 7:00pm in Moulton room 213.
Alex Sofroniew will be discussing “The Lansdowne Ancient Marbles and Californian Collectors”. From the time of their discovery in Italy in the mid-18th century onwards; the Greek and Roman marble statues amassed by the British Lord Lansdowne and displayed in his house in London were celebrated as some of the finest artworks produced in antiquity. When they finally went up for auction in 1930, after being in the possession of the Lansdowne family for generations, collectors were hungry to buy. In particular a group of extravagantly wealthy men from California would try to snatch up the best pieces, and bring them West.
